ABA Panel Says “I would be suspicious of companies that don’t have websites”

At the recent American Bar Association Law Firm Marketing Strategies Conference, the panel came to the conclusion that small and medium law firms must have a web presence in 2009 and beyond to compete.
Let’s face it, people are suspicious of companies that do not have reputable looking websites. They are relatively inexpensive and can bring in many cases per month making them one of the better investments the firm may make. The real question is how do you get clients to come to your site once you have one up?
My clients and I have found that a multi pronged approach is useful when getting clients to your website. We make sure to geographically target clients through organic search engine optimization and search engine marketing. We are looking for clients that are looking for help. Most people in the United States now have access to the internet and will do a search for a specific kind of attorney or case that is similar to theirs. The important thing is to get onto the first page of the search engines for the search terms that they enter into google or yahoo.
If you are not on the first page of the results you simply won’t be found very often. Remember though, your competitors who are on the first page of the search engines are going to be found. This is why lawyer marketing is important. There are tons of cases out there as evidenced by the overloaded calendars for the courts. The real issue is getting them.
So if you are not able to rank organically on the first page, the other option is to purchase a spot on the first page of results. This is done through search engine marketing. Usually this is going to be a pay per click (PPC) campaign that targets specific legal terms that your clients would put into a search but your ad will be located outside of the organic search results. While people tend to trust the organic search results more than the PPC results, there are still billions of them clicked on daily.
While you can get as much traffic as you are willing to pay for, you can also increase the potential of your website to rank on the first page by using SEO or search engine optimization techniques. While you could do some of this yourself, you will find better results with a search engine optimization consultant because of the amount of time involved and the learning curve required to get it right the first time.
